When is the best time to start tutoring?

The old adage holds true...the best time is yesterday, the second best time is today! Imagine the challenge to bridge 6+ years of learning gaps with a busy and often disinterested teen.

So the key is to start tutoring as soon as you notice issues or have concerns. If they struggle one year, chances are, it will only get worse in following school years and the gaps will widen. Education is all about compounded growth - students build year over year on skills they've developed since they started school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Could we skip the academic assessment? I don't think my child needs one!

Our academic assessment evaluates a student's skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, math, and study skills. Some students will also be assessed in phonics or writing. These are a mix of written and verbal activities. We use the time to also talk to your student to understand how they perceive school, learning, and their own strengths and weaknesses. All of this is critical for us to provide objective, effective tutoring recommendations for your child.

What if I don't know what my child needs? School is so different from when/where I grew up!

Huntington Learning Center has been serving the greater Elk Grove area since 2002, and we've continuously evolved based on the needs of our local community. It's also why we believe our academic assessment is beneficial to every family by providing real insight into a student's academic progress. It's an opportunity for you to understand what your child may need, while we provide recommendations based on years of professional experience.

Why can't I pay the assessment fee the day of?

As soon as an academic assessment is booked, we have to enter the student's info into the system, schedule the 1.5 - 2 hrs with a trained staff member, schedule the follow up consult with a director, and put together the paperwork for the assessment. All of which is to say that it takes time and labor BEFORE the actual assessment happens! As a result, we cannot offer a discount if you wish to pay on the day of.

What do we need to bring for the academic assessment?

We provide all the necessary supplies (pencils, paper, etc.). Please bring a water bottle and a small, easy to eat snack for your child.

If your child has a cell phone, we ask that you hold onto it or it be put away to minimize distractions. (We do not allow cell phones to be used on our teaching floor.)

What happens after the assessment? What if we decide not to enroll our child?

A few days after the academic evaluation, you'll meet briefly with one of our directors to go over the results and discuss your child's academic strengths and weaknesses. From the assessment, we will provide recommendations and educational goals.

There is no "sales pitch." Our priority is always what's best for the student's education, and we encourage families to ask questions and take time to determine what next steps are best for them. We believe that every family benefits from additional information and insight into their child's academic performance, whether they end up enrolling with us or not!

Do I need to stay with my child during the academic assessment? Can I watch the process?

You do not have to stay with your child during the evaluation. Once their child is escorted onto our teaching floor for the academic assessment, most families leave to run errands. We will text you 20-30 min before the end of the assessment to give you time to return for pick up.

We want each student to give us their best academic performance during their assessment, so we kindly ask families to not sit in or watch the process as that can be very disruptive or distracting.
