Is your child, who normally gets excellent grades, suddenly struggling in a class? Common classes that might require additional help are: Honors English, Pre-Calculus, or AP US History. If that’s the case, the “wait and see” approach is rarely successful. If your student is struggling, it is usually because of one or more of the following reasons:
the class’ teaching style is not working for your student
the class is moving too fast for your student
your student has skill gaps which makes it harder for him/her to understand the material
Your student will bring all materials from class (syllabus, textbook, notes, homework, past quizzes/tests, etc), and we will review the concepts and practice with them. We do not provide our own curriculum as each school’s teachers tend to have their own structure and methodology.
If your student has always struggled with math, we recommend working on their foundational math skills first. If a student struggled in Algebra, for example, they won’t be able to master Calculus, even with subject tutoring. Imagine expecting someone to be able to hit a homerun when s/he barely knows how to swing the bat.
If your student has always done well in the subject, but just finds THIS class particularly challenging, that means subject tutoring could be the extra help they need to succeed!
In addition to the homework, we typically expect our students to move up one grade level for every 3 hours of tutoring per week (if a student starts early enough in the semester or term). The longer you wait, the harder it is to cover all the class topics in a shorter period of time. We typically close enrollment to subject tutoring by mid November and late March each year to ensure realistic time to cover the curriculum.
